Ready, Set, Gold! recently conducted its end-of-(school) year evaluation at the LA ’84 Foundation and a turnout of more than 30 people – which included Olympians, Paralympians and teachers – participated in our best program ever! First, RSG! Chairman John Naber (swimming ’76) offered up his always-insightful thoughts on L.A.’s bid prospects for the 2024 Games. Attendees then got a formal introduction to Olympian John Moffet (swimming, ’80, ’84), the new head of the Southern California Olympians & Paralympians Association (SCOPA). Finally, keynote presenters Chad Fenwick from LAUSD and Olympian Tai Babilonia (pair skating, ’76, ’80) spoke on the process of implementing the RSG! program into a new school.
Congratulations to Dr. Steven Ungerleider and David Ulich from The Foundation for Global Sports Development for their outstanding work on the new documentary film Munich ’72 and Beyond. A major FIVB beach volleyball tournament is being staged this week in Qinzhou, China, and among the players representing the USA is RSG! Olympian Nicole Branagh. The competition is the first event to employ a new test rule that the block does not count as a touch. That will allow for three contacts after the block. Ready, Set, Gold! Olympian David Kimes received his sport’s highest honor last month when he was inducted into the USA Shooting Hall of Fame in Colorado Springs, Colo. The marksman was a six-time World Team member from 1966 thru 1986, and also competed in the Pan Am Games. He is the only U.S. shooter to win an individual World Championship (1974) in which he set a world record, and he then repeated the feat four years later at the next World Championships in 1978.
